I used to love Jacksmith. It was one of my favourite flash games. A real classic. So, I immediately bought it when it showed up here, to support the devs.
Basically all that's been changed is that it's now running locally pretty decently, and in fullscreen.
They have, however, removed male models, put in female ones, all-female "warriors," and some mixed. Somehow, this is supposed to be a positive addition (and removal) though I personally don't see it.
Instead of adding mechanics, smoothing things out, refining the game, adding content, they decided that an aesthetic "correction" was the only thing that was necessary. One that infringes on the original design, as well as general logic.
From the devs' blog:
"Hey Everyone!
As some of you may have spotted in the trailer, our warrior lineup’s gotten a bit of a shake-up. It’s something we’ve felt was missing ever since the web game was first launched—but now we’re excited to announce that women warriors are officially joining the battle!
Some clans, like the Cluckshire Brood and the Pigarius Legion, will now feature a mix of male and female fighters. Others, like the Oxdin Herd and the Capriloch Clan, will remain all-male. On the flip side, the Martello Flock and the Meadowguard have gone fully female!"
The implication here is that the original version was lacking. Not necessarily creatively, but ideologically. As a correction, not an addition.
Why? It doesn't add anything. It revises it. And removes models that were present. The devs claim this change is about something that was supposedly "missing" from the original.
So we're supposed to believe this was a creative decision, when they've actively replaced some original models.
It's completely disingenuous nonsense, that panders to a certain subset of fashionable ideologies. It's shallow and unnecessary.
I’ve chosen to refund the game. Not out of spite, but because I don’t support rewriting finished works to quietly score ideological points or secure future funding from organizations that reward conformity over creativity.
If you're going to supposedly "remaster" and relaunch something, then stay true to the original and add things. Instead of removing them under the promotional guise of progress or improvements.
The game's still there. And I don't suppose most people will mind or perhaps even notice. So buy it if you feel like this doesn't matter. It's essentially still the same, mechanically speaking.

Oh Jacksmith, where do I start....
Jacksmith was one of those unforgettable flash games you'd play on a school computer (Instead of doing your work) You play as a donkey blacksmith, crafting weapons like swords and bows for your team of warriors (Don't think I ever got passed the axe as a kid) You don’t join the fight yourself—you build the gear that helps them win. It was creative, fun, and surprisingly addictive.
Now, Jacksmith is back with a fresh remake on Steam (Hallelujah!) This new version keeps the charm of the original but looks better and runs smoother. The crafting is still satisfying, the characters are still fun, and it brings back all those good memories from the browser game days.
Whether you played it years ago or are trying it for the first time, Jacksmith is still a great time.
Rating: 10/10 – A simple, charming game that’s just as fun now as it was back then.
I'm also still patiently waiting for Papa's Pancakeria, because that's where the real gaming happens.....

Edit: changed my review to negative when I noticed someone calling out the devs for scoring easy political points. Apparently, they replaced some characters models with females ones. While it's no Jacksmith 2, which we've been begging for for years, this remaster is more than satisfying. The original Jacksmith didn't need much improving upon, the upgraded visuals and addition of girl warriors is good enough for me.
