I really would like to recommend this, but it's such a broken and ugly mess that I can't.
If you want to play this game, I would suggest playing the original version instead. Not only is it cheaper, but it also comes with its phenomenal predecessor, System Shock (both Enhanced Edition and Classic). System Shock 2 Classic also still works just fine right out of the box and is very easy to get set up with various QOL changes thanks to the long-standing community. It also has plenty of fully functioning mods to spruce things up even more if you feel the need to.
Ugly UI changes:
- AI upscaled stuff which is just lazy
- Some new item/MFD textures are bad, with errors like extra objects poking in from outside the frame
- They also changed the text strings labeling those software upgrades, so instead of Research being shortened to RSCH, it now shows as RSRH
- The original text for most of the UI is replaced, even when playing without any mods loaded, which results in a mishmash of high and low-res assets
- Related to the above point, the maps were left almost completely untouched so they're low-res, but the callouts on the map were updated with icons that are high-res and don't even match the style of the icons on the map key
Missing/broken textures and objects with no mods loaded:
- Nightdive appear to have rebuilt the intro level and deleted all the objects in the restaurant to place their own, but didn't use any original assets, so it's just empty
- Some detail textures are missing from the first level
- Explosion FX are broken and display a pink background and stretched pixels (reportedly fixed, but it still hasn't been)
Mod issues:
- The modinfo.json files found in mod archives have a space for author's names, but they do not display in the menu
- What changes did Nightdive actually make with sshock2ee.kpf? Who knows, because there's no description or version number
- Some of the weapon world models and viewmodels are taken from/based on the Tacticool Weapon Replacements mod, but are incorporated into sshock2ee.kpf, with no attribution outside the ending credits, which most people probably won't watch anyways
- What does patch_ext.kpf do? Who knows, because there's no modinfo.json, so there's no description, version number, author or even a title
- The Psi Amp's generic cast FX is missing for most abilities unless you play without sshock2ee.kpf loaded
- Some old mods just don't work anymore due to changes in file structure or conflicts with other, default mods
- Very poor fan mission support, such as custom cutscenes not playing and incorrect audio files playing for seemingly no reason
Co-op is not fixed as advertised:
- It doesn't seem to work over LAN
- Playing online, if somebody crashes, the save file gets completely broken and you cannot continue
- Desync can occur, resulting in phantom enemies that can't be killed
- Achievements can't be earned
Other problems:
- Wacky graphical glitches like objects flickering and distorted texture scaling
- I experienced plenty of crashes, many of which came from just running the game with no mods loaded, some with mods that barely changed anything and some with just the default suite of mods
- The text for one of the information kiosks in the first level is wrong, and describes hacking even though the title says it's about ammo usage
- For some reason there's no updated textures for the piles of disgusting worms, so they look very out of place
Problems that have been fixed:
- For some reason, the software icons on the TECH screen in the stats MFD were originally missing
- Plenty of keybinds were initially missing from the options menu, like quick using Psi/Anti-toxin Hypos and displaying the compass
There are more issues than the ones I brought up, these are just what I observed myself. Almost all of the positives I can give this are just because the game itself was really good to begin with, or are from community patches that Nightdive did not work on.

Having recently played the classic version of System Shock 2 with minimal alterations (patched with SS2Tool, Community Patch, and English Subtitles), I feel like I now have the right perspective to judge the remaster.
The remaster is almost exclusively a visual overhaul. Okay, that's not technically true, but from a practical standpoint the visuals and online co-op are what stand out. The game retains a lot of its old jank - melee combat is wonky, gun recoil is visually jarring (it just moves your camera to point at a different angle in like a single frame), the map is fuzzy and hard to read at higher resolutions (2560x1440 here), to name a few things. I haven't played co-op, so I can't judge how that compares to the original.
Along with co-op, the visuals are the main attraction of the remaster and I'm not really sold on them. Honestly, I prefer the original textures and models. The new stuff is a mixed bag of decent to good textures and middling improvements to models. Additionally, the cutscenese are included in higher res, which is a marked improvement over the classic version. I'm not sure if the audio got remastered but to my ear it sounds the same, which is to say it's fairly low quality. This is mostly noticeable on the soundtrack, because the dialogue all has heavy effects applied.
On top of this, there are some technical issues which I wouldn't have expected from a remaster. The most game stopping of which is a tendency for the game to run at what feels like less than 30 FPS, despite my computer well exceeding the recommended specs. This seems to happen randomly and requires a game restart to fix. A more minor problem is that some hotkeys are unable to be rebound and aren't listed in the keybinds menu. Because of this, some keys aren't able to be used, one example is that I was unable to rebind quicksave to F5.
The game itself is great, but I don't think this remaster brings enough to the table to earn its price tag. There are few meaningful improvements to the game outside of co-op play via Steam. It could be worth it for those who are itching for that. Thankfully, the classic version is still available. I'd recommend getting that and patching it with SS2Tool for an almost identical experience.

Absolutely no reason to get this for co-op, game bugged out hard enough to wreck 5 hours of progress with me and my friend. Game randomly decided in the middle of the playthrough to decide the multiplayer session was now for one single person, deleting all save data for my friend and rendering it unable to work at all.
Absolutely wild this was released in this state with co-op as a main feature, since there's plenty of other people having similar issues.

To start i will say I never played the original System Shock or System Shock 2 back in the day. My first time playing the series was when the System Shock remake was released back in 2023. Because this is a remaster rather than a remake, I gotta say, I'm not a fan. System Shock remake was fantastic because it improved not only the look of the game but updated the mechanics to a more modern format. SS2 being a remaster, all it got was shiny new paint slapped on and feels like a step back from SS Remake. Yes it's probably an upgrade from the og System Shock but I'm not coming from og System Shock so I don't think this game is for me.

Hail SHODAN!
System Shock 2 Remastered is an amazing game that brings the classic System Shock 2 up to the modern era. The graphics have been completely updated with beautiful and vivid textures, making the aging classic feel new and exciting. The gameplay remains largely unchanged, but some of the mechanics have been improved for smoother and more intuitive play. The remaster also includes several quality of life enhancements and bug fixes, making the game run better than it ever has before.
The story of System Shock 2 has also been considerably enhanced by the remaster. SHODAN, the villainous AI of the original game, is now far more menacing and powerful, making the game more difficult yet rewarding. The other characters in the game, as well as the environments and plot, have also been heavily revised and expanded.
Overall, System Shock 2 Remastered is a fantastic game. It's a great entry point for those who missed out on the original classic, and a must-have for veterans of System Shock 2.

Unfortunately this was very disappointing...sorry
I love what Nightdive do MASSIVELY but The main reason I didn't enjoy this, is ironically, SYSTEM SHOCK 1 REMAKE!
You will go in expecting the same great game play and atmosphere as the remake but its nothing close. I do understand this is only a remaster and they have done what they have set out to do but its not enough after the Remake of the first.
The animations are terrible as the characters still float around and still only have a few frames of animation which destroys any immersion and fear. Also the voice over in the audio logs are horrendous with voices that sound like members of staff kept back late after work to record audio beyond their will not like SS Remake were you couldn't wait to hear the next step in the story leaving their message with panic and fear in their voice..it just doesn't hit the feels.
The decider was the U.I. (user interface) yes leave the original in but they have just updated with higher res icons and a few text changes, for modern gaming this is awful! I hate that I couldn't instinctively just ESC from the MFD, you have to press the same assigned button again to exit... they needed to rework this completely as far as im concerned. its clunky and unintuitive with a plethora of sub menus and tabs.
There is a reason why there is only 700 odd reviews after 2 weeks of release, and thats because this only appeals to original game fans which is rightly so.
Conclusion: It is a great game but it needs to be completely REMADE doing what NightDive did with the first one! Then you can take as much money from me as you see fit, but ill pass on this for now...NEW PSIONIC APTITUDE REQUIRED...

Hello all, I am a software developer at Princeton University. As a on going senior I have gained some knowledge of not only human anatomy, space, AND coding, but I have a good shot at valedictorian as I am the top of my class. This game has upset me for a numerous amount of reasons. Number 1 they mumble gibberish technology buzzwords and call it cool space stuff. totally lame right? They also have a mass of flesh called the many which is a hivemind with a central control area. This is a very ridiculous and unrealistic thing to have especially in the real world. Not only the pure premesis of SHODAN herself puts me in utter awe due to its fairy tale like logic. This game never fails to amaze me.

It's basically just a very slight improvement with a brand new big price tag over the original. I really hate when people say that kind of thing personally, but after trying it myself, I really have to say it here because that's what it is.
Can't rebind F5 or F8/F9 (any function key for that matter) so I just lost an hour of progress because I accidentally saved just as I was dying by hitting the keys that I assigned to quick save and quick load and that's it.
Auto save and quick save are saved to the same slot.
The fact that nobody thought to patch that problem from the original is awful. I'm a game developer myself. The death animation takes at least about 4 to 5 seconds. In fact, sometimes it's not even obvious when you're dying because all you do is slightly lean to one side like you do as if you press q or e. You guys really didn't think that it could happen where somebody saves just as they die? Are you kidding me? Remember guys, this is a AAA company that is deeming this worthy of release.
Terribly clunky just like the original. Not recommended.
Thanks for the steam points!
Got my refund.

Well Nightdive is back at it again. Bringing back a masterpiece.
System Shock 2 finally gets that QOL update it deserved.
System Shock 2 originally came out in 1999. Its a game about exploring a space station infected with alien life forms.
You need to be very careful how you upgrade your skills. You need to be careful how you use your resources. Its a punishing game but also rewarding.
SHODAN is one of the greatest villains ever,

I mean... It's System Shock 2 but prettier and with better controls, It's like saying 'It's ice cream but with chocolate shavings and chantilly cream'.

9/10
It would have been 10/10 if there was an option to make SHODAN your wife.
