Look, I'mma be honest with you. I like TGM, but I suck at it. And because of that I wouldn't recommend it, at least not outright.
Basically you should ask yourself if these statements are true:
1.) "I like TGM."
2.) "I'm good at TGM."
3.) "I don't value my money."
If you answered yes at least two out of three times, go ahead and buy this game. Otherwise you might be better off waiting for a sale or get a different Teris game altogether. This game is unforgivingly difficult and depending on your level of skill and/or dedication you may not get much mileage out of it.

this is very much barebones

This game was not ready for release, and desperately needs polish.
While I would love to support a competitive TGM release on PC right now this release is worse than the FREE fan effort of Texmaster from 2008 (!!!), or Heboris.
It feels like an internal demo for showcasing your work, not a full game ready for release, even looking beyond the keyboard binding issues and seeing what features have been delivered.
It is so stripped back in features, and so poor in presentation and lack of polish (nice menus etc.) that it feels like a game that should be $5 at most.
I will refund this, and consider repurchasing if they really rework the game and add features to make it worthwhile like a challenge mode, proper menus, online multiplayer.

Since the latest patch, the game is now playable. Therefore, I will revise my review. Kudos to ARIKA for responding very quickly to players' grievances, even though issues remain.
First, the good:
- Input filtering has been implemented, DAS now works as expected (when the diagonal input option is selected in the game options).
- Keyboard customisation is now possible, so the game is playable without an arcade stick.
- Borderless fullscreen has been added, so it is now possible to switch between the game and a chat window in between games.
- A static background option has been added, which is useful as some of the flowers swaying left and right induced motion sickness when trying to focus on the playfield. Personally, I would prefer the swaying flower issue to be addressed individually, as animated backgrounds have never been a problem in the previous two instalments in the TGM series. Disabling animations entirely is a bit of a crude solution, but it works, so I thank the developers for adding it.
- AVX2 processor instruction set support is no longer required, which is expected for a game with such graphical simplicity.
Unfortunately, being able to play the game for longer now makes it possible to identify ways in which the game feels "wrong". This is subjective, and you may disagree:
- The game feels slower than TGM3 Terror Instinct. This is likely due to move reset being implemented instead of step reset. The "extra button" is supposed to make the game faster, but it has two problems:
1. It inverts the locking logic (down drops, and up locks - normally, up drops, and down locks).
2. It has to be held down for it to work. Of course, you can use sticky tape to force the button to stay down (or is that cheating?). Personally, I would prefer a toggle.
- The next box is too far away, making it hard to read the next piece when you are "in the zone". The location of the next box was perfect and intuitive in the previous instalments of the TGM series, as well as in the earlier prototypes of TGM4.
The list goes on:
- The graphics still stutter. This has been identified as a timing issue, because the game appears to target 58Hz instead of 60Hz. Therefore, on a 60Hz display, some frames will stutter.
- The game does not recognise or reward the player when a "secret grade" > shape is made into the playfield.
- The Standard control method allows pieces to fly completely outside the playfield when performing twists near the top of the playfield, as well as allowing hard dropped pieces to lock above the floor of the playfield.
- The backgrounds are extremely crude and pixelated and do not scale gracefully to 4K or even 1080p resolution.
- The graphics are misaligned when using a display resolution wider than 16:9.
- The graphics are vertically squeezed when using a display resolution narrower than 16:9.
- There are no vertical sync or adaptive sync options.
Overall, I don't think this is enough to recommend the game just yet. Newcomers might be able to ignore the issues and still find enjoyment in the game, but I would say a game like Tetris Effect: Connected would be more fun for such players. I am looking forward to ARIKA giving this game the attention and polish it deserves, and to make it a compelling game for both newbies and hardcore TGM fans alike. I hope the developers keep listening to the players and fix the remaining issues.

They absolutely massacred this game. It took them forever to add basic features other tetris games had on launch, they completely destroyed the OG format for TGM, and for its price, not worth the money. It's got absurd amounts of input delay on SRS rotation, and it's too easy on ARS to play good. I'm actually fuming about how bad this one is, they had 20 years to sort all of this stuff out, and they didn't.

If you want to start playing Tetris and are willing to fork over $40, buy Tetris Effect instead.
If you want to start playing TGM, play the earlier entries instead.
I only recommend this game to players who have had their fill of the first 3 TGM games.
This game does not offer much for a majority of Tetris players compared to other games:
· Marathon is just Marathon.
· Normal is a less fleshed out version of previous games Master modes.
· Master has only two fun gimmicks, the frozen Pikii and pre-rotated pieces. Past 1300 is extremely difficult and will be a major wall for a majority of players without dedicated practice to its gimmick alongside the pre rotated pieces.
· Asuka's gimmicks make learning the game alongside invisible gameplay less punishing. Would recommend as a start to 20g gameplay.
· Konoha is fun and more importantly there are girls.
· Shiranui is VS-slop gameplay against a bot, and the way delays work in this mode make eaten inputs feel awful. You can play better versus games with real players instead.
I love the music, vfx, and overall aesthetic of this game, but unless you're already very good at Tetris, this game will not offer much that is new.

Mihara-san, please take my money as penance for bootlegging the previous TGM games.
For the uninitiated: This game was in development hell for over a decade due to rights negotiations between Arika and The Tetris Holding Company (TTC) breaking down, so its release is both a surprise and a cause for celebration for Tetris fans worldwide. It's a big deal that this game exists at all.
Review at 15-ish hours in:
- This is the type of game where you need to set your own personal goals. Unless you're among the top 0.01% worldwide, you're not getting Grandmaster anytime soon. That's part of the appeal of this series: TGM is a game for people who enjoy setting new goals and watching themselves improve over time.
- I'm going to be reviewing the game based on the 'TGM' ruleset, since that's half of what makes these games unique. The 'TGM' ruleset has different rules for how pieces rotate and move, as well as a more punishing sequence generator for the incoming pieces.
- Unfortunately, it seems like the Tetris Holding Company pushed to water down some of TGM's mechanics again, as the game now resets lock delay on move/rotate. It could also be that this was a deliberate decision for balance, I couldn't say. That said, the upward kicks for T and I pieces are definitely welcome in my eyes.
- Normal Mode: I wish that Normal mode had just a bit more challenge to it, but maybe I'm just underestimating my own abilities.
- I haven't spent as much time with Asuka as I have with Master and Normal.
- Master mode is more analogous to Shirase/Death from previous titles. It starts at 20G and is yet to be cleared by anyone as of writing this review.
- Konoha: I can't get my brain to wrap around it yet.
- Shiranui: The most competent CPU fighters in any official Tetris game, no contest. These CPUs will set up midgame multispin setups like it's no big deal.
- I wish this game had the traditional grading system from TGM1-3. It made it easy to choose your next personal goal.
- Replays, practice mode, and "practice from replay" are all VERY welcome additions.
- Overall, it was worth my money, but whether it's worth yours comes down to whether you're interested in a Tetris game that you'll be coming back to for months, if not years.
PBs as of writing this review, for reference:
Normal: Clear in 9:20, survived credits
Master: Level 630

We're kinda spoiled for official Tetris content right now.
For most gamers:
>Best casual single-player Tetris experience? Tetris Effect.
>Best official collection of just the weird ones? Tetris Forever. (Tetris Plus series when)
>Best hardcore Tetris for experts with a Tetris Hardcore soundtrack? TGM4.
For people with Tetr.io pages:
I'm glad Alexey got his game back, but I guarantee you that you forgot what SEGA Tetris plays like. It's a different gender of Tetris and you just need to adjust. It's like a challenge mode where the rotation system was implemented by sadists. The backgrounds are fine, I guess, but you don't want those kinds of things being distracting in a TGM.
But is that why you're reading a review? To decide if you wanna get a TGM game? Return of the Mack, as far as I'm concerned. This isn't Magical Drop 5, this is TGM4. You can barely claw your way through "Normal" and the game will congratulate you by rating you a normie. Yes I recommend this game to other tetrisers.

DAS still feels terrible. Going back to TGM 1 and 2.
Scoring is basically nonexistent.

Developers have been nothing but communicative, supportive, and transparent since the moment the game released.
On a side note, I have never had more fun failing at a game over and over.
