I have no interest in Sonic the Hog as a franchise but this is genuinely a brilliant racing game, great to play with friends while you're all on ketamine
It's snappy, it's fun, the game actually WORKS, runs amazing on Steam Deck and it's crossplay.
This game is more proof that selling my switch to buy a Steam Deck was the right move!
It's only been 2 days and I already have 16 hours on this game. I've had my Switch 2 for almost 4 months and only have 20 hours on Mario Kart World. Noth said.
Did I refund the game because of the price? yes.
Do I still believe that this is easily one of the best racing games produced in the last decade, rivaling mariokart? yes.
This is such an amazing rendition of racing kart games; the maps, characters, customization, optimization, everything is so incredibly well done, but I just can't justify the price tag. If the game goes on sale, I will without a doubt return to purchase this game in a heartbeat. If you have no problem with the price tag, buy this game because I promise you won't be disappointed.
This game is absolute cinema. Sega woke up and decided to release a banger. This game Definitely deserves GOTY.

I don't blame you if you'd rather wait for a sale as this game is comically overpriced, but trust me it is absolutely worth your time if you like kart racers.
Also like... you can play as Hatsune Miku and Knuckles the Echidna in the same game bro.
Plays great on the Steam Deck. You can run it on high settings 60 fps if you drop the textures resolution to 75%, and you'll get about three hours out of like that.
Music slaps, Blaze is best girl, and the people who start races with the Monster Truck are not fit for civilized society.

Summary & TLDR conclusion: So this game is being heralded as the new king of premium kart racers because of a combo of market factors like:
-Mario kart world flopping, causing a refugee crisis.
-Switch 2 price & Nintendo’s current bad reputation, so gamers have negative energy & want a positive place to put it.
-Gamers outside nintendo’s walled garden wanting a premium kart racer.
-SEGA skillfully playing into this with marketing.
Etc.
But does this game deserve to wear the crown of premium kart racer king? Or is it just incidental because Nintendo screwed up so much?
TLDR conclusion: This game isn’t overall as polished or premium as a king succeeding Mario kart should be. BUT it’s also overall by far the best premium kart racer available today in my humble opinion. It’s immensely fun and should have a successful future.
Some positives:
•The game is very fun! :)
•Cross-play: Absolutely massive win. Obviously it’s the perfect type of game for cross-play and it will hugely extend the games life and success.
•Tracks & Crossworlds: The system of interjecting a smaller Crossworld track into each race track is awesome and adds excellent variety to every race. And the main tracks themselves overall seem good too.
•Customization: There’s some very nice cosmetic customization for your kart. And the gameplay changing gadgets offer a lot of build & racing style variety.
•There’s a lot of single player content to enjoy & unlocks to work on when you’d like to take a break from multiplayer. And single player can actually be very challenging too.
•Music is a lot of fun and really good (but there’s some audio issues right now).
•The friends only “race park”multiplayer looks awesome & is local and online if you have friends but I can’t confirm since I don’t :/
•The game is very well optimized & has excellent performance. That should be a given, especially since this game isn’t super graphically intensive, but with the state of modern gaming in general it’s actually a big relief.
•Wonderful on Steam Deck. But don’t turn on Lossless Scaling because it causes slow down since the FPS is linked to game speed (I’ll be honest I only half understand what this means).
Some negatives:
•Online multiplayer: You matchmaker, get in lobby, share some friendly emotes, play just 1 race and then the lobby disbands. It feels lonely and like a huge missed opportunity. We should be able to play Grand Prix across multiple races with the same lobby of players. Or at the very least have the option to stay in lobby for continued single races. They could even add the rivalry system from single player Grand Prix. Hopefully they improve this.
•The games price feels too high considering some of the “not quite premium” factors. I personally think it’s worth the full price for me. But simultaneously wish it was $60 instead, if that makes any sense. I almost feel like it would be more successful/profitable at $60…
•Many DLC characters, free & and paid, won’t have voice lines. I really don’t think there’s any reasonable defense of this decision and hope they change their minds, although they probly won’t :(
•Potential p2w or just pay for variety: Since characters and karts will be sold in paid dlc there’s always a risk of the classic corporate “oops the new paid content was accidentally overpowered oh no! We’ll fix it a month later after everyone buys it”. Hopefully that won’t happen here but even still the best case is pay for more variety. Kinda wish it was just paid cosmetic and map packs.
•The kart customization is radically better than Mario kart world, but there’s much much less character skin variety here.
•Graphics & animations are another spot where it definitely doesn’t quite reach that premium pinnacle. Especially if you go into time trial and slowly look around the tracks. I don’t feel like it makes the game less fun, but it does impact the overall feel especially since it’s trying to dethrone Mario kart.
•Some audio compression & sound mixing issues, hopefully will be improved after launch.
•60 FPS max, with 30 FPS environment background combined with game speed being tied to fps. Maybe they did the 60 cap specifically because the game speed is tied to fps. A bit unfortunate perhaps.
•Personal preference note: the kart physics and driving are pretty “arcadey” so some fans of past games in this series apparently may not like it or find it jarring (I’ve never played them I’m just reporting what I’ve seen a number of people say).

P.S. Garfield: This section is a memorial for the few people like me who were excited for “Garfield kart 2: All You Can Drift” which released a few weeks ago. The YouTube trailer was exciting with great music and a truly majestic Garfield. But the game, which currently has 2 players, is apparently an asset flip reskin of Smurf kart or something. SMURF kart?! Hey wait Smurfs are blue….Sonic is blue too, and released just a few weeks later. MY GOD…
Big is actually Garfield after he survived countless millennia continually evolving until the heat death of the universe, when he then time traveled back to enjoy more Lasagnas.
Seriously though this game healed my heart after that.
spongebob's specialty stat type is handling, the one thing he's canonically terrible at. this is an unforgivable oversight by the devs and must be fixed
to get the max speed option, they force you to play every grand prix, which means you won't be able to get a refund before you get to see if you'll truly enjoy the game or not.

This is the best kart racer since double dash and you could really milk this with a million characters from the sonic universe and beyond.
but you're killing the potential by making it the same price point as a nintendo game.
The switch 2 is the fastest selling console, and it was packaged with Mario Kart early on like it always is which effectively made it free for most people who were already buying S2s anyway for the large pool of IPs. you gotta out do that with a lower entry price.
Yall put a lot of love and work into this game, I don't wanna see it dumped on the side cause of a bad price tag.

The best and the most fun Kart racing game on the market currently, you don't need a Nintendo console just to play mid kart racing games anymore, Sonic Racing is here to save us all, and on PC it's an absolute no-brainer.
Extremely fun gameplay with solid and addicting racing mechanics, a somewhat complex and rich gadget system that gives you a lot of different skills that incentivize build making and experimentation with the game's mechanics, you can prioritize playing around the things that you like the most and be rewarded for it, if you like drifiting, you can go all-out on that, if you like doing air-tricks, you can do that, if you're an assh0le you like playing around items, you can make a build for that, if you're tired of your friends shoving blue shells up your ass, you have builds to minimize that, and you literally have builds that you don't need to do anything and you'll just get a stat boost at the end of the race improving your chances to win on the last stretch.
Customization options are plentiful, with a lot of car parts, you can change the color of everything, there's no excuse to running around with an ugly car unless you're just lazy, the customization is great.
You have a friendship mode where you can deposit all your hardwork earnings from hours of grinding races to get unique rewards from the characters you like, like titles, skins decals etc, everybody will know you're a simp for that character.
The soundtrack is absolutely insane even if you're not a diehard Sonic fan, it isn't about nostalgia or anything, the music is simply good, the remixes in the final lap of a race go hard and it'll keep you at the edge of your seat.
I'm looking forward to playing this game for the years to come.
