If you enjoy being repeatedly violated and touched by dive comps while the enemy team’s triple-heal squad turns every fight into a five-minute war crime, then boy, do I have the game for you. Marvel Rivals is less about shooting and more about questioning every life choice that led you here. You’ll queue up thinking, ‘Maybe this time I’ll have fun,’ and five minutes later you’re staring at a killcam of Spider-Man punching you through three walls while Iron Man gets pocketed harder than your phone in skinny jeans.
The matchmaking feels like it was designed by Doctor Strange during a multiverse hangover — one game you’re a god, the next you’re a background extra in someone’s highlight reel. Every match is a new spiritual journey in pain management and the five stages of grief.

If you are not interested in playing this game in Ranked mode, I do recommend this game. But if you are, then I don't recommend it, and here's the reasons why:
Competitive Matchmaking is not skill based, and it shows.
Every match is a curbstomp, and you are either giving it, or receiving it. EOMM (Engagement Optimized Match Making) is not geared towards fair games, it's geared towards player engagement, and one of its main criteria is played time, not rating. Once I learned of this, I decided to try some things.
So, some experiments that yielded consistent results (that is, happened five times in a row for each): if you keep playing on a losing streak, the algorithm will just think your engagement is not affected with losing, so it will use you as fodder to feed winning streaks for others (tested with two separate 10-match losing streaks after a single win, one after the other. Enough to knock me down from Celestial II to Grandmaster II). If you quit the game after two or three losses, you will guarantee a win on your next login (five out of five tries). If your winning streak makes you climb a rank, you will start a losing streak two wins into that rank (five out of five tries).
Take it with a grain of salt, of course, but I don't think it's luck.
The goal of this EOMM system is to keep you engaged in a psychological hamster wheel. Once you start winning, you ride that dopamine high hard, until the game serves you a loss. And then the game keeps serving losses, trying to get you to chase that high again, testing your limits, but it will only realize it pushed too hard when you quit the game out of frustration. So, to placate you it will give you a win or two when you return, then a loss or two, keep you playing, keeping it tame.
And eventually a streak will begin, either winning or losing, rinse and repeat. The end result is that too many players are boosted by the artificial wins the algorithm serves. I'm writing this review after a match in Grandmaster II where none of my teammates made KOs, while the other team had 10-20 each. This is something I have never seen in 30 years of gaming, not even in bot matches.
As I said, every match is a curbstomp one way or the other. Fair matchmaking means the matches should be close, should be intense victories, but that only happens on 1/20 matches. What we have here is people that climb the rankings because they only play a couple of hours a day, get their couple of wins, and when they log off, the algorithm takes it as "no engagement", and keeps serving wins to people who clearly shouldn't get them in a competitive setting, just to keep them coming back.
Me, I'm not a particularly good player. I dabble, and I can aim and play reasonably well, and that got me to Celestial II. But I've been through massive 10 match losing streaks multiple times, and those losing streaks aren't against incredibly good players, it's just having really bad teams one after the other. You could argue this review is a huge amount of copium, but the evidence is so egregious that it comes to a point where you truly wonder what's going on, with no ego. One thing is "I played terribly, we lost because of that, but my ego won't let me accept it, so I'll blame the healers", and another is having the entire team play terribly against a team that plays flawlessly. It simply is not fair.
In any case, this system is very documented. It is patented, and Netease devs have published papers about it. Here's the disclarimer that there's no direct confirmation that Marvel Rivals uses it, but skill-based matchmaking never felt like this, both in win-ratios, and in match quality.
It's a shame. The game is fun, the mechanics are really good, it really is what Overwatch should have been. But with this type of matchmaking, chasing the competitive grind is simply not worth it. I'll keep coming back for the Quick Play and battlepass, but the matchmaking ruined any prospects of seriously devoting any more time to this.

Everything is great until you level up and join Competitive Mode, I've been living for 26 years but didn't yet know that I have like 6-7 fathers, and most of them are around 15-16 years old.
