Look, the gameplay loop is great, but this game suffers from the primary flaw of its genre: the more stuff you unlock, the harder it will becomes to make a viable build. Still worth throwing money at the dev if you enjoyed the demo and don't mind leaving most of the unlocks locked.
ETA: Right after I posted the original review, I unlocked a feature that helps mitigate that issue a bit.
ETA2: Apparently there is a late game unlock that allows for full control of what items can appear, per a user in the comments. Once again, please give the dev some money.

The balancing is pretty meh. Too many random variables ruining the fun. RoR2 does it pretty right almost any match you can win eclipse8 if you're good enough. Here The first playtrough was damn easy as I was getting the right upgrades. From the second playtrough I got bamboozled with random items constantly that have literally 0 effect on damage, this was frustrating since the mobs were getting stronger. I see there are more unlocks to do banishes, skips etc. However you shouldn't need to unlock to skip the vague randomness, the unlocks should be more for min-max, not something that is core gameplay and locked behind further progression.

Where is the meta progression? Many of the positive reviews her are only an hour in, and thus cannot have seen the T2 area yet, in which enemies get a 1000% HP buff ad deal significantly more damage. And you do not get to improve your characters in between runs? That seems like an oversight. I suppose the idea is that only extremely lucky runs, were the items you get to pick line up perfectly, are meant to go anywhere. Not my kind of game, sadly, as the art style, music and gameplay are really good, and make it stand out despite the fierce competition, but the balancing is completely off.

A lot of comparisons to Vampire Survivors which I understand as a broad comparison to the survivorslike genre in general, but imo one major difference makes this a very different game: the way it handles meta progression.
In Vampire Survivors you play to get gold and use that gold to boost stats between runs, meaning you can fail your first run but then have enough gold to boost your damage by x%, so the next run goes better and you get more gold to boost more stats to make runs easier. This game also has a meta progression, but it's for unlocks rather than stats. You spend silver to unlock weapons, tomes, characters etc. And therein lies my problem; no matter how many runs you fail, you don't really tangibly get any stronger because the meta progression only adds more things to the rng pool. For some reason you're also locked to only having two weapons and two tomes per run, at least until you complete 50(!) "quests," meaning that the rng pool slowly filling up with middling options is actually more of a detriment than a help. This leads to a frustrating loop where you never really start to feel like you're actually making any progress. You can fail over and over and accrue more and more silver, but you have no real way to spend it to make the next run more likely to succeed.
I guess it's basically the Brotato style of survivorslike; if you like that, more power to you. I personally found this one frustrating in its current form.
