If you're a casual player give this one a miss. The playerbase is already of a high level making it an unwelcoming experience for new players. You need time and effort to get anywhere good at this making it less of a skill problem and more getting to know the games intricacies.
If like me you only have a few hours a week to play with friends this isn't your game unfortunately.
Yes it has an AI mode which I can imagine was catered towards players like me but that was very easy and there's no way to change it's difficulty. There is no in-between.
It's a real shame as me and my friend group really wanted to like this as the premise is great.
Aside from that, it runs flawlessly, netcode seems good and graphics are great. You can see the blizzard charm.
Hope this review helps some

I had a load of fun playing the beta. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is so much fun. My problem is:
Why am I paying for a $30 game, maybe even $50 if I buy the deluxe edition, to have a greedy store tab that's filled with premium currency you have to pay real money for, and it's sorted from the most expensive currency to the least?
I could get it if the game is free. Several free games have a greedy store page, but they need to make their money somehow. You already made your money from me buying the game, you shouldn't have a store page that has dope cosmetics I can't unlock by playing the game, and I have to pay real money for.
Remove this greedy store, or let me be able to get the currency by playing the game. Absolutely ridiculous.

Unfortunately, this game is pay to play with premium currency. This is the sole reason I do not recommend... I really hate this trend because I can already see the near future where they announce "WILDGATE IS NOW FREE TO PLAY",,,
Beyond that, this game is very fun. But don't expect to win the game if you are not playing premade, as people would rather play the whole time without communicating, lose and then blame each other for not talking.
Reminds me of Guns of Icarus, which I really liked to play but never had a big community and ended up dying. Hopefully, this game won't have the same fate.
EDIT: In the comments a lot of people are saying that I somehow stated that the premium currency is for pay to win items? But I clearly have not stated this.

The game is fun. You have a maximum of four crew members on your ship, but no one knows how to press "ICE." Your ship is equipped with an electric field, but no one knows how to activate it. You’ve got at least four turrets on board, but no one wants to shoot. Everyone just wants to act like America and colonise other people's ships.

The game is interesting and fun, a lot of opportunities for creative tactics and the ship-to-ship boarding is a blast.
Unfortunately, the game launched with the most straightforward and shameless in-game macrotransactions store. I do not have any issue if they want to sell cosmetic skins for your character or your ship, that's completely fair play (although I gotta say, $5+ for a recolor and not even a unique skin is pretty ridiculous - there are recolors being sold for $20+ USD in there).
The issue is seeing a promising game from a nostalgia-studded studio having patently indefensibly predatory virtual currency. There is NO argument that the use of an intermediary virtual currency improves the player experience or was implemented to improve the player experience. It is inherently hostile.
And yes, good dear Joe Gamer reading this review, I know it doesn't matter and they are only cosmetics and that's just how the industry is, and that YOU may not mind any of this at all. I just can't really see any of that as a compelling reason to be okay with any of this or stay quiet when I see it.
The narrative of a passionate dev studio wanting to create quality titles 'by gamers, for gamers' sort of falls apart when the C-suite has no issue partnering with a publisher interested in the literal exploitation of some (any, really) statistically vulnerable players.
TL;DR,
Game is solid and fun (but certainly not exceptional), and they REALLY are channeling their ex-Blizzard experience with an in-game real money > virtual currency cash shop that is already trying its best to live up to WoW's legacy (seriously, a $20+ rescolor? I can't imagine what a UNIQUE ship skin is going to cost in the future).
Edit:
I'm noticing several comments that either fail to comprehend my message here or are outright bad actors; so I wanted to clarify the position further.
I would like to reiterate that I am not against microtransactions, premium cosmetics, etc. nor have I shown any entitlement for the developers to provide more content for free on an unending basis. The primary issue is with the inherent anti-consumerism of implementing virtual currency, the inclusion of artificial FOMO through timed shop offerings, and the frankly outrageous price they are asking versus the quality of what they are offering.
If the shop consisted of individual items and bundles available in a catalog at all times in exchange for reasonable amounts of Real Money Dollars ($$$), that would be pretty darn cool. So, no, not inherently anti-microtransaction - but this industry can do better.

Unfortunately is very brutal for new players, they need to add beginner lobbies for people lvl 10 and under to learn the game. I can't really get my friends to stick with it since almost every match a 77 win pro player boards your ship and 4Ks your team. It looks cozy but there are some serious try hards atm making up the already small playerbase, and with a super fast TTK this is quite the tough game to recommend.

I wont even shit on the matchmaking system being bad because it has to be good to keep finding me lobby after lobby of short-bus riding window lickers that couldn't shit in a toilet if you duct taped their ass to it.
The game itself is fun but the crossplay cant be turned off, so enjoy some playstation/xbox goober letting his mic naked wrestle with his uvula while his baby mama slaps dishes together in the background because she cant find her cigarettes.
The game also does not let anyone join mid session, so if any of those deadbeat degenerates decide to help Mary-Beth-Sue look for her cigarettes (surprise, it's under their baby in it's crib, aka the dog bed) and leave the match, you are stuck out manned and outgunned.
This game is very clearly destined to flop like your fat uncle off the diving board after 6 too many PBR's.

Wildgate devoured my soul, spit it out, kissed it gently, and said “you belong to me now.” I told my mom I found the one and she thinks I’m dating — I am, it’s Wildgate. Every time I log off, a piece of me dies and respawns in the loading screen whispering, “take me back.”

Wildgate? More like Whack RageBait—with a side of unsolicited PvP penetration.
I took a 3-day break to recover my stamina bar. Came back and everyone’s in full sweat mode, comboing me like I owed them child support.
This game used to flirt. Now it just bends me over, no safe word, no dinner, no post-fight cuddle. Every match feels like a one-night stand where I didn't finish.
If you’re not grinding daily, you're just lube for some tryhard's killstreak.
My name is Dr Hugh G Rection, and this game violated me emotionally, spiritually, and maybe legally.

2/3 games my whole crew abandons before the round and im left alone. do like dota, you abandon you get put in the punishment pool, you can only queue with other people with bad behavior scores. Or heros of the storm, if you abandon you are replaced with an AI, and you can only rejoin this game until its done, you cant queue for any other.

UPDATE: I feel like 200 hours in live is a good point to update this review (approx 360+ hours in total when including beta and playtest phase).
The short of it is that I still really enjoy Wildgate. I play it almost every day, and I still feel like I get at least one match per day that has something happen that I've never seen before. The magic is still there. Yes, you can even lose a match and still have fun! For me, this includes soloqueue and premade team games, but those with competitive streaks may want the mood tempering provided by the premade experience. Yes, you will occasionally get a rough game here and there, but I would still say I more often have good matches than bad ones: probably a 70:30 split for solo, and 90:10 for premade.
Reviewers who state that Wildgate is "stale" or that "they see everything it has to offer" within the first 10 hours offer an argument I find incomprehensible. It's like saying you've seen everything Minecraft has to offer after you make a Diamond Sword. The game has tons of content potential as long as you yourself make the effort to be creative with the myriad tools the game offers you, and even a small play can end up winning (or losing) you the game in the long run. You can be an absolute noob, but do one really cool thing that ends up winning you the game: I've seen it happen quite a few times before.
The game has "metas" but they're a bit like SC:BW in that although a certain strategy might be popular and generally strong at some point in time, there's a plethora of strategies that still work as long as you're willing to play it correctly, and any number of things can throw a wrench in the works of a tried-and-true strategy. Thus, although some people might blindly stick to a certain "meta" I do not see it as mandatory, and I say that as a recognizably top-tier player - compare this facet to hero shooters or any other popular contemporary PvP game. There's a lot of new and refreshing design choices like that in this game: for example, player movement is quite important, but it's not necessarily about maximizing potential speed (like in a movement shooter) moreso than it is maximizing control while still going fast, masking footsteps, etc.
Even outside of the game, the developers are awesome, and the game director communicates candidly with the community pretty much every morning on Discord. Pretty much every change I've seen them make is well-intentioned and puts the game in a better direction. The developers are still committed to the game and the community, and have lots of cool content coming up in Season 1 and custom lobbies. So, if you're still on the fence about the game, it is fine to wait until Season 1, or a free weekend, or a sale (sales and free weekends are on the horizon!). I'm glad it isn't F2P, because the current monetization in-game is quite ethical. I would hate having to get bombarded with obnoxious store advertisements, login rewards, engagement optimized matchmaking, and so on: these common manipulation tactics and dark patterns inherent to any live-service F2P game which make the experience worse for everyone.
Feel free to leave comments if you have questions. Otherwise, we'd welcome you aboard.

The game is marketed as an epic, space ship battler, but is ultimately decided on who the best boarder is. Enemies can break windows and come in from any direction, making secure doors or traps useless. If they are a better gunner than you, they wipe your entire squad, overload the reactor, while their remaining team shoots at you from their ship. Because it is impossible to prevent entry, the game is entirely reliant on who is better at FPS. I would love if the game was more about the ship fights, but until that changes, the game is yet another FPS that will probably die out in a month.
Very disappointed.

It was a quiet, almost surreal evening when I found myself in a Waffle House with fifteen dollars burning a hole in my pocket. I'd convinced myself that a late-night meal there was a good idea. How bad could it be, right? I walked in, the neon lights flickering just enough to give off a kind of eerie charm. The waitress, whose name I could barely read on her name tag, seated me in a booth that had clearly seen more action than the last decade of pop music.
I skimmed the menu, trying to justify why spending $15 at this greasy joint was a wise decision. It felt like the kind of place where you order something, and it’s just... there. Not bad. Not great. Just food. So I went for the classic waffle with a side of eggs and bacon, thinking this would be the culinary peak of my evening. Fifteen minutes later, the food arrived, and I stared down at the plate.
The waffle? Soggy. The eggs? Somehow undercooked and overcooked at the same time. The bacon? Crispy, but only in the way that cardboard is crispy. I took a bite. “Well, that’s $15 well spent,” I muttered to myself, almost ironically. The whole meal was so underwhelming, it made me question my life choices. But I powered through, determined to at least get my money's worth.
As I was finishing up, my phone buzzed. It was my friend Sam.
“Dude, you gotta check out this new game called Wildgate. It's only $30. Best RPG I’ve played in ages!”
At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. $30? I’d just blown $15 on what can only be described as a sad excuse for breakfast, so maybe a game could make up for it.
“Sounds cool, but I just spent $15 on Waffle House. Kinda feel like I just paid $15 for a toilet experience.”
Sam laughed. “Haha, well, let me tell you, Wildgate is WAY more fun than two shits.”
I paused. “Wait, did you just say two shits?”
“Yeah, you’ll see. The game’s that good.”
With that, I hung up and decided I needed to take care of... other business. It was time for a massive shit. Waffle House had done its job; I was ready to exorcise the demons from my stomach. After a good 10 minutes of pushing and prodding, I emerged from the bathroom feeling like a new man—lighter, freer, and full of regret.
Now, with $15 spent at Waffle House, another $30 on Wildgate, and a feeling of incompleteness hanging in the air, I decided to dive into the game.
The first few minutes were a blur of beautiful landscapes and characters with deep backstories. Combat felt fluid, choices had real consequences, and the story? Oh man, it gripped me like a well-done waffle should have. I was hooked. I thought to myself, Okay, this game is actually really fun. It made me forget the $15 I’d spent on Waffle House. And hell, it made me forget the whole “two shits” ordeal Sam had described.
By the time I was fully immersed in Wildgate, I realized something important: Wildgate was easily more enjoyable than the two shits I’d taken combined. It was a real adventure, and I was invested in it. So, as I sat there, thoroughly entertained, I couldn’t help but smile. Maybe spending $15 on a half-assed waffle meal wasn’t the smartest move, but the $30 I dropped on Wildgate? Totally worth it.
In fact, when it was time to review the game, there was only one thing I could say:
Wildgate? Three shits up.

Negative entirely due to business practices employed here.
I am very disappointed to see Wildgate has chosen to go for another live-service model. They are basically setting themselves up to go Free to Play, so lest you really want to play right now I would just wait the few months out before inevitably it becomes free. When I pay 30 euros I don't want to be met with premium currency bundles and FOMO exploiting skin shops.
Gladly would I have paid 40, perhaps even 50 euro for the game considering how much fun I had with it in the beta. But this is just a gutpunch for people who actually want to support the game. Basically all that was added since the last beta are lootboxes and premium skins.

This game has potential but it is a very bare basic arena ship fighting game (think Sea of thieves arena match in space). There is not a lot of content to it. It has a very elementary style game play, meaning if you want more in-depth content it is not there at this point. The ship battles do not feel urgent enough like in other games(SoT). Ship piloting is sluggish feeling and match making does not set you up with a full crew oddly enough. The few games I played I did not have a full crew at all while I played. Not having a full crew sets you up for failure, which obviously sets off the balance of the game. The events are not really spectacular. The pros are graphics are amazing, and combat is flushed out pretty well. I think the price point is to expensive for the game, considering there is not much to it. I would wait to purchase this game until more content comes out for it. Right now it seems rushed.

This game is so good, I can see the potential, it reminds me Overwatch that the visual design are quite similar. Controls are awesome, I can feel the play smoothly, good job for that. I have been waiting next PVP game and I was thinking "this is it", knowing a fact of waiting for matchmaking takes so much longer, that I even can't get a single match, I don't think it's going to be the one I'm looking for. So I just refunded this in the end :(. For developer, make it free to play and charge skins or battle-pass in-game, I guarantee you the matchmaking are going to be easy, and I will buy your stuff for rewarding you guys for this good game.

Holy MOLY this needs abandon penalty.

I do not have friends to play it with, but if you do, its worth a purchase. It's like Sea of Thieves in space. The only fault is that its tough to convince three friends to spend $30 on a multiplayer-only game.

Game is fun, really really solid game loop!
But. Man. I can not get behind a game that has a price tag and micro transactions. Sure it is cosmetics who cares. But it is the principle of it. Now it is cosmetics, then whatll be next?
The devs lied in their dev logs about the store and for that I do not trust them and I do not recommend you play this.
Fun Game, bad business.

a good game killed by developer greed - down to 200 players just two months after release and they refuse to lower the price. gg

Unfortunately, I didn't realise that people surrounding the game are way too toxic and homophobic. I regret this purchase.
